New Booklet Tells Stories About Urban Mobility Challenges in London With An Equity Lens

MEDIA RELEASE

LONDON, ON. May 6, 2024 – “The Unseen Commuters: Navigating Injustices In Urban Mobility” booklet contains eight stories based on real life situations describing mobility inequity experiences of individuals stripped of  fundamental human rights including the right to safety, freedom of movement and the right to live. Plus a fictional story of an aspirational future where life could be different for the better. During the book launch, a limited number of physical copies will be available at Pillar Nonprofit Network’s SDG Cities Final Showcase. A free digital version of the booklet is already available online. You can access it here.

The book also includes a chapter with statistical data to better understand the breadth and depth of the issue and discuss data gaps; a chapter with the key learnings and next steps for improving and implementing an equitable mobility strategy; and a chapter presenting the two guiding frameworks for the project—UN Sustainable Development Goals and Mobility Equity.

The booklet is part of a research project led by the SDG Cities Program at Pillar Nonprofit Network in collaboration with the City of London, Crouch Neighbourhood Resource Centre, Hamilton Road BIA, London Cycle Link and Mobilizing Justice Consortium. Another direct outcome of this research project was the update of the City of London 2023-2027 Strategic Plan in three of its sections to include “mobility poverty” as a guiding principle for all road infrastructure projects in London, Ontario.

The book launch is part of a showcase of all the initiatives implemented through the SDG Cities program. The event is being hosted by Pillar Nonprofit Network, a longtime advocate for cross-sector collaboration and inclusive communities. From the book, Luis Patricio, SDG Cities London Lead, writes: “Our hope is that these stories and the illustrations will put a face to the traffic data, that it will make hardships a little more visible, and  will ensure that the ones that need our help the most won’t be forgotten.”

The event is Thursday, May 9, 3:30-5 pm at Innovation Works and the public can register on the Pillar Nonprofit Network events page. Luis Patricio will be available at the showcase to answer any question about the booklet and all the other initiatives implemented in the last three years through the SDG Cities program.

SDG Cities is a collaborative project of 10C Shared Space and Pillar Nonprofit Network. SDG Cities is made possible through supportive community partnerships and funding from the Government of Canada.
