Even through World War I, people continued to dance the popular ragtime dances introduced between 1910 and 1914. The dances were fun and easy to do and the music was lively and cheering so social dancing helped keep up spirits and keep the community together.
So join us as we celebrate this era of popular dances at our annual Fanshawe Frolic weekend August 1-2. This year’s special theme is “Ragtime Frolic”, featuring dances popular during the war years – 1914-1918.
Period costumes are encouraged but not required. And you don’t need to have any previous dance experience. At the Saturday workshops, Dance Mistress and Historian, Mme, Cathy Stephens will teach you all the basic and simple steps you need to know to be able to do all the dances at the ball. Practice the dances during the workshops to authentic period recordings and dance to live period music provided by Childgrove from Michigan at the ball and Sunday Family Frolic.
Tickets for the whole weekend are $50. plus HST per person and that includes a 2 day pass to the Village, 2 dance workshops, a full country supper, an evening ball with souvenir ball cards and the Family Frolic informal dance and tea on Sunday. Admission to the Family Frolic and tea alone is covered by the $7 admission fee to the Village on Sunday. Advanced booking is required for Saturday.
